The Foremothers Café in the Metaverse Reopens on ENGAGE
A Groundbreaking Initiative by Author Helen Lundström Erwin
New York, NY — Helen Lundström Erwin, celebrated author of the historical novel Sour Milk in Sheep’s Wool, announces the grand re-opening of The Foremothers Café on the ENGAGE virtual platform. Remarkably, Erwin is the first author in the Metaverse to create a world inspired by a setting in her own novel.
An inspired Virtual World
Located in a digital representation of Lund, Sweden, in 1918. The Foremothers Café serves as both a nod to the early 20th-century women's movement in Sweden and a vibrant community space for the modern age. Just like Sour Milk in Sheep’s Wool does, this virtual world captures the spirit of the women who fought for equality, while also providing a global meeting space for advocates today.
A Community Reborn for the Digital Age
In September 2022, Erwin launched The Foremothers Community Discussion Series—a monthly gathering offering dialogue and support for women and allies. This pioneering endeavor perfectly complements the café, offering thematic depth to the space while facilitating actionable discourse.
A Vivid Historical Tapestry
From the Suffrage March of 1918 to the nascent fights for contraceptive freedom, the café incorporates intricate details that reflect the social and political currents of the era. "Every element, from the antique automobiles to the portraits of iconic women like Elise Ottesen-Jensen, adds authenticity to the world," says Erwin.
Awards and Recognition
The Foremothers Café has already garnered attention, including a nomination for an Auggie Award for Best Societal Impact 2023. The café has been mentioned in Forbes and featured in the award winning Documentary, 48 Hours in The Metaverse. In addition Helen Lundström Erwin was nominated for an XR Woman Award in the Trailblazing category for creating The Foremothers Cafe, and received a scholarship from SWEA and a grant from the Puffin Foundation.
