The UnRushers Running Club
It’s official. I’m starting my own running group.
It’s not for lack of trying that I’m not joining an existing group. I joined one once and I was left in the dust by the group within the first 3 minutes, and I don’t actually run that slow.
After that experience I e-mailed and called every single googleable group in the area. Called every running store in Manhattan. Spoke to several gyms.
Each sounded very welcoming, telling me that of course everyone is welcome! They cater to every shape and speed, and I’m told they have several speeds in each group.
Excellent. Yay! I could feel the excitement at the beginning of each phone call. Then I asked what those speeds are. Usually they range from 6-min miles to 11-min miles. All speeds? An 11-min mile is the slowest?
The only group with actual varied speeds that I found is a Galloway group.
Galloway is great, but I personally don’t like to take walk breaks. At least not as a method. It happens that I stop and walk for a bit if it’s very hilly or if it’s too hot, but other than that I prefer to run the whole time.
I can’t be the only person who longingly look at groups of runners, desperately wanting to join but worrying at not being fast enough.
I thought that running with a group would be more of a social event with likeminded people, not a group where everyone is speeding. But it seems like it is, at least in New York City.
So there, I have only one thing left to do, which is to invite you all to join The UnRushers Running Club!
We’ll have all speeds, all much slower than 6 min miles, and we’ll enjoy running together and leave speeding for our lone runs.
Welcome!
